A Career Built on Experience

Dr. Richard Gitter is a native of New Orleans and grew up in Old Metairie. He graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1981 before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tulane University in 1985.

Following college, Dr. Gitter spent two years in Austin, Texas, where he continued his pre-medical studies while working as an Adult Probation Officer for Travis County, Texas. He returned to New Orleans in 1988 to attend Tulane University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top 20% of his class.

Dr. Gitter then moved to Dallas, Texas, completing five years of training as an intern, resident, and chief resident in General Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center. He went on to complete his Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

For the next fifteen years, Dr. Gitter dedicated his career to cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. Before returning home to New Orleans, he served as Director of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, while also serving as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Gitter was board certified in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1999 and 2000 and later re-certified in both specialties in 2009 and 2010. He is the Director and Founder of Gitter Vein Institute in New Orleans and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is also a committed member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Endovascular Specialists,

Society of Baylor Surgeons, Muller Surgical Society, and Vein Experts. Dr. Gitter has authored numerous articles published in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals and has conducted successful clinical trials in his field. He is also a regular presenter at medical conferences around the country.
